The application period for the 2024 US Student Fulbright Grant will soon open.  We cordially invite all eligible students who are interested in pursuing a Master's degree in Chinese Language in Taiwan to apply.  Award Profile 

Awards are available to pursue a full-time Master’s Degree program in Chinese Language and Culture (Division of International Sinology) at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). The program is taught in Mandarin.

NTHU has been consistently ranked as one of the premier universities in East Asia and widely recognized as the best incubator for future leaders in industries as well as academics. In the 2022 QS World University Rankings, NTHU is ranked within the top 200 universities in the world and the top 50 universities in Asia. NTHU has educated a wide range of notable alumni, including Nobel Prize laureates Chen-Ning Yang, Tsung-Dao Lee, and Yuan-Tseh Lee. Students from over 40 countries have chosen NTHU for its distinguished faculty, cutting-edge research, and world-class facilities.

The Master Program of Chinese Language and Culture is under the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at NTHU in Taiwan. The Division of International Sinology in this program offers exceptional educational and research resources, aimed at enhancing students’ proficiency of Chinese language to be Superior level (ACTFL) and fostering an understanding of introductory sinology, as demanded by the global community. The program places equal emphasis on improving language skills and cultural knowledge, while underscoring the complementarity of language learning and cultural cultivation, to deepen students' understanding of Chinese history and culture, and their recognition of Chinese society.

The Master Program will also afford students with the opportunity to engage in dialogue and exchange ideas with experts and scholars from diverse nations, primarily through special lectures, international conferences, workshops, scholarly interviews, fieldwork, and other relevant activities needed of search.

Before graduation, the Fulbright student are required to fulfill a minimum of 100 hours of Chinese-language internship in a relevant professional field, and complete a four-hour weekly English teaching assistant internship to have more interaction with local students for deeper cultural understanding. This program will offer various online or on-site teaching or administrative assistant positions, depending on local or international collaboration, such as bilingual language exchange, historical and cultural guidance, among others. Students may participate in the above-mentioned project positions, subject to conditions, to meet the requirements of their internship.

The award is co-sponsored by the National Tsing Hua University.

 

 Grant Period 

The grant is initially awarded for 12 months; renewal for the second and third year is dependent upon the grantee’s academic success with a minimum GPA of 3.7 (A) on a 4.3 scale.

 

 Benefit  

The grant provides recipients with full tuition support at National Tsing Hua University, student dormitory, round-trip airfare, a monthly living allowance, and national health insurance as long as the candidate maintains satisfactory academic standards. Tuition waivers for the number of credits required for graduation are granted to graduate students. Students may enroll for additional credits, but they will be responsible for the added tuition and fees. Please visit the Fulbright Taiwan website for more financial information.

 

 Foreign Language Proficiency 

Required - Intermediate

 The applicant’s Chinese proficiency of CEFR B1 or its equivalent is required. Advanced Mandarin study in Taiwan in the first year is required. CEFR B2 is expected at the beginning of the second year.
